Haiku Classes
What Are Haiku?
Haiku are short poems, originating in Japan hundreds of years ago. While many people know them as "the 5-7-5 poem," that 5-7-5 structure in not common in contemporary English-language haiku. In reality, there is significant variation in the structure of the haiku. There are even haiku that consist of one word!
Contemporary English-language haiku generally contain two images or phrases, related in a unique, surprising way. They describe a single moment which is set in a certain season, describes a human experience and/or observes some aspect of nature. The power and beauty of the haiku is revealed when the relationship between the two images is understood. The reader of a well-constructed haiku experiences an emotional reaction, gains a richer understanding of each of the two images individually, and feels a sense of satisfaction with their overall haiku experience.
Why Take a Haiku Class?
Haiku are uniquely suited for our fast paced society. Because they are so short, they can be read and enjoyed quickly. If you have even five minutes you can read and digest several haiku. It's fun to discover the "hidden meanings" inside the haiku - sometimes several different "hidden meanings" in the same poem.
Whether you were bitten by the haiku bug in elementary school, want to write haiku but don't know where to start, or you are already writing haiku and want to share ideas and write with other like-minded people - you are in the right place!
Second Spring Creations workshops and classes provide the opportunity to read haiku and share our thoughts and reactions. We will discuss the "rules" of haiku and see what happens when haiku do or do not follow those rules. And of course we will spend time practicing the art of writing haiku. Together we will overcome fears of putting pen to paper and we will boldly write poetry in a fun, judgment-free, encouraging environment. If you want to learn more about this ancient, beautiful Japanese poetry, this is the place for you!
Honestly, I was not sure what to expect in a 2-hour work shop for Haiku. We covered a tremendous amount of material. Rachel was concise in her handouts, mindful of time management.

This class made me understand both how complex and simple haikus are. I really liked the conversation and learning about haiku.

- loved, LOVED, loved this morning’s haiku session. [Rachel] made it accessible with the examples and breaking down the rules...the time just flew by. I would totally sign up again and again.
